What to expect when visiting Horseshoe Bend & Glen Canyon Tour

Are you looking to do something a little bit different on your trip to Las Vegas? If you’ve got an adventurous spirit and consider yourself a nature-lover, this is the perfect tour. Head out of Las Vegas for the day on an adventure into the canyons, lakes, and caves of Page, Arizona.

Your day will start with an early pickup from popular Strip hotels, anywhere between 5:00AM – 6:00AM (see Know Before You Go for full pickup schedule). Hop aboard the motor coach, equipped with charging outlets and a restroom, and prepare yourself for a long and fulfilling day of adventure.

On your tour route there’s plenty to see from the coach as you drive from Las Vegas to Arizona, passing through Utah along the way. As you cross the southern state line of Utah, you’ll have a great view of the Virgin River Gorge and the Escalante Grand Staircase Monument. You’ll even be able to see across 80 uninterrupted miles of the Colorado Plateau.

Finally, you’ll cross into Arizona for a stop at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Home to Glen Canyon, Lake Powell, and the Rainbow Bridge Monument, the National Recreation Area has become a very popular summer vacation spot.

The Glen Canyon Dam is a 710-foot-tall structure that was built in 1956 right on the Colorado River. Seeing as the Colorado River is the largest source of water in the Southwestern US, it overflowed the dam shortly after its creation, thus creating Lake Powell. The expansive lake is the second largest man-made body of water in the entire country. It reaches so far, it spreads into both states – Utah and Arizona.

Get out of the coach and tour the Carl Hayden/Glen Canyon Visitor Center, where you’ll have impeccable views of the lake that goes on forever (or so it seems!). Snap photos of its deep blue waters of the lake and the Colorado River and soak in the beauty of it’s sculpted walls and storybook colors.

Your next stop is the Horseshoe Bend Overlook. As the name suggests, the bend is a horseshoe-shaped incised meander of the Colorado River. In simpler terms, it’s where the Colorado River made a 280-degree turn around, carving this mass of rock into a horseshoe shape.

Follow your tour guide on a 1.5 mile (roundtrip) journey around the overlook. As you walk the bend encompassed by 360-degree views of natural beauty, your guide will provide you with a history of the bend and the rest of the National Park. Learn why these natural structures have become some of the most visited places in Arizona.

During today’s journey, enjoy a complimentary lunch with unbeatable views. It’s the perfect time to catch your breath and relax for a bit as you refuel. You will have the choice between a vegetarian or turkey sandwich. Chow down and rehydrate with the ice-cold water bottles provided to all. Once you’re done, it’s back to the adventure.

Your Horseshoe Bend & Glen Canyon Tour tickets include an optional Antelope Canyon tour that we strongly recommend to all. Formed by flashflood waters that created cracks in the Navajo-made sandstone, Antelope Canyon is comprised of naturally sculpted corridors, twists, and turns. For those who choose this option, this will be your next stop.

For the Instagram-obsessed, this is the perfect place to get a photo. The haphazard cracks and shapes of the rock let all different types of light in, reflecting a myriad of colors and shades throughout the canyon. Guests will have a choice to upgrade their tour with either Upper Antelope Canyon or Lower Antelope Canyon, either tour is approximately 75 minutes in duration.

Lower Antelope Canyon begins with a short, 1/8 mile walk along the top of the canyon, with a few views of what is to come. The terrain of the canyon is fairly easy and offers a built-in railing as you head down the man-made stairs into the cavernous area. Once inside the lower canyon, you’ll be able to explore and poke around the corridors as your guide provides an explanation as to how these unique rock formations came to be.

Upper Antelope Canyon begins with a 4 mile, 4 wheel drive approach up a dry river bed. On this 75-minute tour, you’ll find towering sandstone walls, winding corridors, and slot canyons. As you explore the unique shapes, colors, and reflections of the canyon and its curves, you’ll start to understand why Antelope Canyon is often called “a photographer’s dream”.

Once you’ve enjoyed your chosen canyon, either Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon, it’s time to head back to Sin City. Sit back and relax as the coach zips through the desert back to the Strip.

(Note that the exact order of today’s attractions can vary from day to day.)

Your Horseshoe Bend & Glen Canyon Day Tour tickets will allow you to get out of Las Vegas and explore the nearby natural beauty. Words cannot do Glen Canyon, Lake Powell, or Antelope Canyon any justice, so you really do have to see it for yourself. Get out there and adventure!
